All three unions are affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). Together the AFT unions at Rutgers represent 11,500 of the nearly 19,000 unionized employees of the re-structured Rutgers University which absorbed much of the UMDNJ workforce in 2013. Everyone enjoyed the perfect weather, beautiful venue and delicious food. The picnic was open to union members and family members of all ages. Elected officials from nearby legislative districts and the Board of Freeholders joined other special guests from community groups and student organizations to celebrate the hard working Rutgers worker. Rutgers workers make a difference in the lives of students and the community every day.

Picnic attendees were reminded that the AAUP-AFT part-time lecturers continue to fight for a fair contract. Show your support by retweeting the Part Time Lecturer poster found here:

Additionally, as AFT President Randy Weingarten asked for us to do on Labor Day “…let’s show the people who want to tear workers down the faces of the hard-working Americans they’re attacking.”

Print out this sign, fill in your job, take a picture and post it to social media with the hashtag #IAmMyUnion. (You can also email your photo to Please include your name, where you work and anything else you’d like to share, and it’ll post to the AFT’s Facebook and Twitter!)
