The purpose of this organization shall be:
To secure full trade union rights, including the rights to exclusive recognition and collective bargaining, for all employees who are eligible for membership.
To advance the economic, social, and political well-being of the membership. To promote the improvement of working conditions of the membership.
To encourage mutual understanding and cooperation among the membership, and promote good relations with other unions and the administration.
To promote the interests of citizens who are served by the membership.
To promote the effectiveness and quality of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.
To promote democracy and equality in the society at large.

The URA-AFT Constitution was voted on and passed Monday, March 24, 2008 at the membership meeting with teleconference feeds between the New Brunswick, Newark and Camden campuses. Each section of the constitution was reviewed prior to the vote and approved.
