How to Thaw the Salary Freeze

Would You Freeze To Stop a Freeze?

Over 100 faculty, staff and students rallied at Old Queens on Tuesday to support negotiations for a fair contract.  You could say we froze our fannie$ so that Rutgers will not freeze our $$$.

Rutgers management still refuses to change the language they referred to after freezing negotiated  raises in 2009 and 2010.

AAUP-AFT President Lisa Klein put it very clearly in a message to her members:

It’s clear to all of us on the union side that only an alternative “subject to” clause with explicit protections for faculty and staff can exist. Those protections include:

  • A clear trigger that demonstrates true financial exigency
  • Transparency in documenting the financial evidence
  • Meaningful negotiations with the unions
  • Neutral third-party verification of the inability to pay
  • An expedited process which resolves the matter prior to the effective date of the increases

We remain hopeful that Old Queens now understands that what happened in 2010 can never happen again.”

Old Queens didn’t thaw at all on Tuesday.  What will you do to turn up the heat for a fair contract?

  • Return the gift solicitation envelope in your “Rutgers Magazine” by US mail or campus mail.  Just write “Subject to”— nothing else is needed.

Middlesex & Somerset Counties AFL-CIO Labor Council’s 2015 Scholarship

The Raymond A. Peterson scholarship offers awards between $1,000 to $2,500 for high school seniors entering  any other post-secondary institution.

To be eligible, a student must be the dependent of a signed, dues-paying URA member, with a  “B” average in high school.

URA Bargaining Update:

{picture of Rutgers Works sign at office door}While Chancellor Dick Edwards touts some beneficial provisions that the faculty union and management have tentatively agreed upon, the URA-AFT’s bargaining team has not seen similar progress due to management’s stalling tactics and unwillingness to provide counter proposals.  “We have important proposals on the table that could have been resolved months ago,” says chief spokesperson Greg Rusciano.  “Our union members put significant time and effort into crafting proposals for job security, better working conditions and health benefits.”

Tell management it’s time to take our proposals seriously!

Dick Clouds the Issues…Again

Some of our members have seen the recent email sent by Chancellor Dick Edwards to faculty members about their contract negotiations (see: http://www.rutgersaaup.org/news/staff/faculty-and-ta-gas-management-we-are-not-fools).  In it he tries to explain why they should embrace a contract with raises of 2%– even though those raises are “subject to” (see link to our explanation) an escape clause.

His email continues the misleading rhetoric coming from Old Queens.  The deception behind Edwards’ reasoning is this:

Sick Leave (Article 41) for a child’s sudden illness

I got a call from my son’s school to pick him up at the nurse’s office.  Can I charge this to sick time?  What do I have to do?”

Our URA contract provides the right to charge up to 15 days a year of an employee’s accrued sick time to take care of a family member. This provision was negotiated in our first contract in 2007. Soon afterward, management extended this benefit to non-union employees as well.
