Rutgers protesters smell a 'rat' in layoff of worker
Christine Sparta • Staff Writer • August 8, 2008
RUTGERS —A giant inflatable rat chomping a cigar temporarily took up residence on College Avenue on Thursday — and it wasn't a fraternity prank.

URA-AFT Opposes Unfair Layoff

Lucye Millerand and URA-AFT protest Leslye Lowen's unfair layoff
  • On June 5 a newly created Administrative Assistant position in the ORSP was posted for external recruitment through UHR.
  • On June 12 Dr. Michael J. Pazzani, who is in charge of ORSP and OCLTT, moved an Administrative Assistant with approximately five years seniority working at OCLTT to work directly for him.
  • On June 19 Leslye Lowen, who has ten years seniority working at Rutgers, received layoff notification from an Administrative Assistant position at OCLTT.

This is a case of extreme bias against Leslye, a URA-AFT steward and chair of the Committee on Political Education. URA-AFT has filed an unfair labor practices charge against Dr. Pazzani's office. After Dr. Pazzani rejected Leslye's request to be transferred into the open position and denied her grievance, the URA-AFT proceeded to step three with UHR and brought Mike the Giant Rat to Old Queen's Thursday to protest Dr. Pazzani's unfairness.

Oppose Unfair Layoff

8/7/08 When administrative assistant Leslye Lowen reported as usual to Rutgers’ Cook Campus on June 19, she received a layoff notification. One year ago, as an “at will” employee without a contract, Lowen would have been out of job without recourse. This year Lowen has the legally protected right to challenge the layoff because it violated the contract and her legal rights. So instead of going quietly into an uncertain job market, Lowen turned to her contract and is standing with her union members to demand justice.

Send vice president Michael J. Pazzani a letter urging him to return Leslye to work.

URA-AFT Supports A Fair Deal

We marched to demand that casinos bargain with their unionized workers. These casino workers organized last year during the same time frame as URA-AFT, but despite continued profits, casino owners refuse to bargain fairly. We joined many of the same people who supported us throughout the organizing and negotiating process to demand fair treatment of these workers.

    We Have a Contract

    12/17/08

In separate meetings on the Camden, New Brunswick and Newark campuses Saturday, Dec. 15, URA-AFT members overwhelmingly approved our first, four-year collective bargaining agreement.

    URA Contract Economic Provisions:
When Will I Receive My Raise?
Here is the long-awaited schedule for implementing the economic provisions of our contract:

    • 1/25 paycheck will contain:
      • 4.5% increase to base salary
      • $500 one-time bonus
      • 1.5% health contribution will begin
      • 1.2% union dues or 1.02% agency fee begins.
    • 2/22 paycheck will contain:
      • Refund of any premiums paid by employees for traditional coverage or for an HMO. This refund will cover the period from 7/1/07 - 1/11/08.
    • 3/7 paycheck will contain:
      • The retroactive pay increase of 4.5% due for 7/1/07 through 1/11/08
      • Retroactive deduction of 1.5% for health insurance for the same period
      • Ten-month employees will not pay this deduction for July and August.

After votes in favor of the 1.2% dues provision of the bylaws on each campus, URA-AFT members asked many questions about the contract before proceeding to a ratification vote. Recording secretary Theresa O’Neill announced the membership’s favorable decision at the Robeson Campus Center in Newark following the close of the last voting period.
