In separate meetings on the Camden, New Brunswick and Newark campuses Saturday, Dec. 15, URA-AFT members overwhelmingly approved our first, four-year collective bargaining agreement.
Members should receive retroactive payments for this year’s 4.5% salary increase in the same paycheck as the 1.5% healthcare contribution. The $500 bonus check should arrive in February.
Under the terms of the contract, members of Rutgers Administrative unit should not charge a personal day for Dec. 24, when the university is closed. Please see the contract section called University Closings if there are any questions.
After votes in favor of the 1.2% dues provision of the bylaws on each campus, URA-AFT members asked many questions about the contract before proceeding to a ratification vote. Recording secretary Theresa O’Neill announced the membership’s favorable decision at the Robeson Campus Center in Newark following the close of the last voting period.

This committed group of Rutgers Administrative unit workers
has been diligently reviewing contract language and crafting proposals
to strengthen our positions and the university as a whole. Ten go to
the table, while many more pitch in with research and ideas. In coming
editions of this newsletter, we will profile members of the contract
committee to learn where they work, what they do, and their goals for a
contract.

Check your mail this week for a contract survey. Writing a contract that really reflects our needs and the unique characteristics of a professional unit at such a diverse institution is a complex process. The survey focuses on the major issues identified by our co-workers in our organizing conversations. We hope, through this survey, to bring everyone into the conversation.
