We Have a Contract

Dec. 17

In separate meetings on the Camden, New Brunswick and Newark campuses Saturday, Dec. 15, URA-AFT members overwhelmingly approved our first, four-year collective bargaining agreement.

Members should receive retroactive payments for this year’s 4.5% salary increase in the same paycheck as the 1.5% healthcare contribution. The $500 bonus check should arrive in February.

Under the terms of the contract, members of Rutgers Administrative unit should not charge a personal day for Dec. 24, when the university is closed. Please see the contract section called University Closings if there are any questions.

After votes in favor of the 1.2% dues provision of the bylaws on each campus, URA-AFT members asked many questions about the contract before proceeding to a ratification vote. Recording secretary Theresa O’Neill announced the membership’s favorable decision at the Robeson Campus Center in Newark following the close of the last voting period.

Communications, grievances and local accountability highlighted the agenda Saturday, Aug. 25 as Bill Harty from the American Federation of Teachers' (AFT) Union Leadership Institute worked with 43 URA-AFT members interested in becoming stewards. During contract negotiations, stewards are acting as primary sources of information for members.

    Contract Survey

Check your mail this week for a contract survey. Writing a contract that really reflects our needs and the unique characteristics of a professional unit at such a diverse institution is a complex process. The survey focuses on the major issues identified by our co-workers in our organizing conversations. We hope, through this survey, to bring everyone into the conversation.

    Star-Ledger

Menendez, a Democrat, is the latest in a string of New Jersey politicians, including Gov. Jon Corzine and Senate President Richard Codey (D-Essex), to pressure the university to allow a fair opportunity for some 3,000 midlevel administrators, professionals and supervi sors to unionize. The administrators are one of the only such groups in New Jersey public higher education that does not have union representation.
