The URA’s membership meeting on January 30 unanimously adopted a motion proposed by Camden members to oppose a merger of Rutgers-Camden with Rowan University. URA members from Camden have already gotten active in opposition to the proposal. They will need support from union members across the University to get the message to Old Queens and to Trenton.
The URA Camden campus meeting unanimously called upon the URA Executive Board to join the AAUP-AFT’s call for a consortium (http://www.rutgersaaup.org/Camden%20Merger%20Project.htm), not a merger as a solution to increasing higher education resources for Camden. The Board accepted this recommendation at the February 6 meeting.
The Rutgers One student-labor-alumni coalition also supports the consortium concept.
“URA has been participating for several months in a multi-union roundtable on Rutgers-UMDNJ merger,” said Lucye Millerand, URA President. “The Rowan-Rutgers merger is something different. The Barer report ignores what South Jersey would lose if Rutgers leaves Camden: an AAU university, a world-class research library system, an accredited business school, and a law school with a national reputation…the Barer committee wants us to believe these can be duplicated with no new funding.”
